Objectives and Core Competencies

The teaching objectives and basic core competencies of the Department are to:

1. Educate students with basic horticulture knowledge and general agricultural skills for understanding of legal, ethical, and professional practice in horticultural crops, such as fruit trees, vegetables and flowers.

2. Train students with unique characteristics of 4 H (happy, harmony, healthy, and hope) and 4 P (professional, passionate, perseverance, and potential) individual.

3. Develop students' integrated knowledge and ability to employ horticultural methods, including production, propagation, design, utilization, experimental techniques, and various interests and expertise for the sustainable development of the community.

4. Enable students to start from the essence of horticulture and increase their learning ability in the field of biotechnology and entrepreneurial talents for research improvement, production utilization, demonstration and promotion.

5. Teach fundamental horticultural principles that serve as a basis for the synthesis of knowledge leading to rational problem-solving and uphold the spirit of the University motto "Temperament, Simplicity, Strength, and Tenacity" to become well-knowledge, highly skilled, creative and with the potential for contributing to the society.

6. Provide a broad liberal education, including a strong liberal arts background emphasizing critical thinking and life-long learning, which will enable students to become informed, responsible, and effective professionals in the society and to commit a better and healthier living environment, entertainment, and cultures.
